Intel’s 12th generation of CPUs are now available for purchase, with a new LGA 1700 chipset and compatibility with DDR5 RAM, which will be dependent on your purchased motherboard.
Can I use my new 12th generation CPU in my old 500/400/300 etc. series motherboards?
You will need to purchase a compatible motherboard with an LGA 1700 socket for CPU compatibility.
Will I be able to use my DDR4 RAM with my DDR5 motherboard and vice versa?
Although DDR4 and DDR5 RAM look similar in size and shape, they cannot be used interchangeably. You will not be able to use your old DDR4 RAM, if your new LGA 1700 motherboard requires DDR5 and vice versa. There will be LGA 1700 motherboards available requiring either DDR4 or DDR5. Please carefully read the specifications of your chosen motherboard before purchasing compatible RAM.
None of your coolers list LGA 1700 socket compatibility, can I still use them with my new LGA 1700 CPU and Motherboard?
The LGA 1700 socket is uniquely shaped in comparison to previous generations, and coolers will require newly shaped mounting bracket kits to be compatible. Every manufacturer will be handling these mounting kits differently. We have provided a list of manufacturer’s and their current methods for obtaining LGA 1700 mounting kits for their coolers below.
